A Tour of the Kiosk
What a customer sees from the welcome screen to the order screen: choosing a product or design, one step per field, review and the receipt.
Overview
The kiosk is the screen your customers use to personalize an item. It runs on a paired tablet at /kiosk/{your-workspace}. Customers never sign in. A customer goes through these screens:
- The welcome screen: what are we embroidering?
- Choosing a design: one of your products and its designs, or a design for an item they brought.
- One step per field: their text or initials, the font, the size and the thread.
- Review: everything they are ordering, their details, the total and the approval box.
- The order screen: the order number, the total to pay at the register and a QR code.
This article walks through each screen. Setting the kiosk up (pairing a tablet, modes, branding, timeouts) is in Kiosk Configuration.
The welcome screen
The welcome screen shows your logo, your headline and up to two choices:
- Browse our products: the items you sell. The customer picks one and sees only the designs offered for it.
- Personalize your item: for an item the customer brought in.
Finish a saved design is always there too, for a design the customer saved earlier (see Finishing a design saved on a phone).
Which choices show depends on your kiosk mode and what you have published (see Kiosk modes). With only one choice, the welcome screen shows it as a single card. If no design is published yet, the kiosk says it isn't ready. If your workspace is locked for billing, every ordering screen says the kiosk is unavailable and asks the customer to see a member of staff.
When some of your designs are for a particular kind of item, Personalize your item first asks What are we embroidering? (Hat, Jacket, Bag and so on). Other asks the customer to describe the item. The answer narrows the designs they see and is shown on the review step and on the order (see Item categories).
Choosing a design
From one of your products. The product's page lists the designs you offer for it. Your default design for the product comes first, marked Selected for you. A product with only one design (and no library art) goes straight to it. Designs bigger than the product's embroidery area are hidden until the customer taps Show N larger designs (see Browsing designs).
For their own item. The customer browses your ready-made designs and library art, with a search box and size chips (Small up to 4 in, Medium 4–8 in, Large over 8 in). After picking library art they Choose a layout: Design only, Text below, Text above, Text right or Text left. The kiosk builds a design from the art and your fonts. The name box is as tall as your fonts need for a name with descenders (y, g, p, j), and the font that fits common first names in it is offered first. Beside the art (Text right or Text left) the name has less than two thirds of the hoop's width, so those two layouts are hidden when none of your fonts fits a common name there. With ThreadReady Sans and Script, names beside the art are offered in Script first.
Change design, at the top of the design screen, goes back to the list. Once the customer has typed something it asks Leave this design? first, because leaving clears what they typed.
One step per field
Each field the design offers is one step, named in the row of steps at the top of the screen, with Review last. A finished step gets a tick, and tapping it goes back to it. On each step the customer:
- types their text or initials,
- picks a font, a size and a thread colour where you offer a choice,
- watches the stitch preview update as they go,
- sees the Price so far.
Next → moves to the next field. On the last field it reads Review →. Going back is always allowed. A step with a problem (text too long, a character the font can't sew) won't move on until it is fixed, and the message says what to change.
More detail:
- Text, monograms, fonts and thread colours
- The preview, the hoop and moving lettering
- Why the kiosk won't let a customer continue
Review and the order screen
The review step (Looks good?) shows the design, every field, the customer's details, the price and the approval box. After Submit order the kiosk shows the order number, the total to pay at the register and a QR code. See Price, review, approval and the receipt.
Touch, keyboard and language
- The kiosk is made for touch: large buttons, no pinch-zoom while ordering, and no long-press menu. Customers can zoom their receipt and proof pages on their own phones.
- It uses the tablet's own on-screen keyboard. With a physical keyboard, Enter moves to the next step (in a multi-line field it adds a line until the last one).
- On a paired tablet, Enter fullscreen hides the browser's bars when the browser allows it.
- The kiosk is in English only.
On a customer's own phone
Your kiosk link also works on a customer's phone. They can design there but can't place the order: the main button is Save and finish at the shop, which gives them a code to finish at the kiosk (when Home sessions is on in Settings → Kiosk, as it is by default). See Finishing a design saved on a phone.
